Welcome to the Ballroom DanceSport @ JHU! We are student-run club with a mission to immerse the Johns Hopkins community in the world of ballroom dancing. We provide lessons, go out social dancing, host showcases, and participate in local competitions. Hooray!
Not at all! We offer beginner lessons where everyone can learn together in a friendly setting. For those who are more experienced, we also offer intermediate/advanced lessons (Silver/Gold).
Nope! We rotate partners during class, so everyone gets to dance. In fact, partner switching is highly encouraged, as this will help you become a better dancer in the long run. Of course, it never hurts to bring a friend. :)
As long as you are dressed comfortably and you can move freely, anything goes! Same goes for shoes. If anything, try to avoid heels if they are not made for dancing. If you happen to have ballroom shoes, feel free to wear them to class.
We focus on teaching International style in both Latin (Rumba, Cha-Cha, Samba, Jive, Paso Doble) and Standard (Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, and Viennese Waltz). That being said, we host events and outings that include American style, Salsa, Swing, and much more!
Beginner lessons are hosted over the fall, winter, and summer academic periods. Each semester, we teach four dances in the course of 10–12 cumulative lessons. We start with two dances and completely switch halfway into the semester.
Intermediate/advanced lessons are hosted over the fall and winter periods. The ten-week curriculum is geared toward Silver/Gold level dancers. We have professional instructors for Latin and Standard, and we have them alternate every week. Sunday practices are held throughout the semester, giving members a chance to practice together and review the figures with an available instructor. It's helpful for new beginner members and we highly recommend that you take advantage of this opportunity! Click here for more details! |
7) Can I perform, compete, or just go out dancing?
Yes! Each semester, our choreographers arrange a wonderful showcase using the figures learned in class. Performing is completely up to you! We do ask that if you plan to perform that you show respect for our choreographers by committing to practice times. It is always a memorable experience and you will get to learn some cool moves too. We encourage members to choreograph routines of their own! Check us out on Facebook and YouTube.
Competition-wise, we provide basic logistics to help those who are interested in going to local competitions (registration dates, carpools, costumes, etc.). Into the Baltimore dance scene? Our active members coordinate trips to special gems like The Promenade (All Ballroom), Havana (Salsa) and Mobtown Ballroom (East Coast Swing). We provide world-class quality dance instruction at affordable rates. We have semester-long club dues:
We host our classes on the JHU Homewood campus in three main locations: the Mattin SDS Room, the ROTC building, and the Levering Great Hall. Click on the map below!
